You Know …

WriterWhen

I really should focus on keeping it in my head instead of blurting things out loud from my cubicle.

I should also probably stop giving everyone I come across a nickname…. and creating an elaborate inappropriate backstories…

I should and I could but let’s be honest I won’t 😉

Crisis of Creativity

Image

Things I have not been able to do for approximately the last three weeks:

-Get creative for my class projects (a story about a lime green chair deserves a chance)

-Blog creatively (you can pretend otherwise but we both know it’s the truth)

-Edit my current Work In Progress (I hate the working title so that will be my excuse)

Essentially I have been caught in a pool of creative stagnation.

So of course I did what any logical writer would do… I started a new novel. I am not even going to deny that the fact it is set in Vegas is me projecting.

What do you do to get going again?

A New Quarter

A new opportunity to grow as a writer. For the next 10 weeks I am focusing on the short story and after the first reading I am already feeling liberated, challenged and terrified. It is empowering to read, learn and discover that while you have come a long way there is an even longer way to go.

Here is a glimpse into our book camp (This excerpt is from the book “From Where You Dream” by Robert Olen Butler)

The quote that starts the second chapter?

Be There

DSCN0467It’s breaking up but it’s not the end.

It is the beginning, but the start of what is unknown.

On the precipice any number of things are possible if you,

just take a moment.

Sit down, be there, reflect upon your plan.

Just write, it will come to you just like

spring it will awaken you.

*I apologize for my lack of posts, I had a few class related projects come up but I am back on track. Thank you for your continued support.

Who Am I Writing For?

Image

The most honest answer to this question is also perhaps the most conceited but it is the truth. First and foremost I write for me, I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t enjoy it and believe I had something to share. That is not the point of this exercise, I need help from my amazing followers. I have decided to take that risk and truly try to get published in some form or another, any form really but there are certain steps I need to follow.

The first step is this: I have to decide on my platform and my audience. Who am I writing for? Who are the people that read and I hope enjoy this blog? Please let me know, I think I have a general idea but I can’t be sure. I want to make sure I target the correct audience. The first step to failure would be to target the wrong audience.

How has everyone else decided upon their audience? Any hints? Suggestions? Any words of encouragement are greatly appreciated.

Is It Just Me Or?

Image

Do all of your best ideas come to light just as darkness surrounds you? I can stare for hours at my notebook or at my laptop without a single thought to grab onto. Then, just as I drift off and dream of what could be the scene strikes. It’s never fully developed but it is a dare. Do I get out of the warm confines of my bed to jot down this magnificent unicorn of an idea? Or do I trust myself to remember it come the break of dawn?

I have done both several times, meeting with failure and victory.

Is it because I allow my mind to wander so freely that these thoughts take hold? Is it because my imagination is priming itself for whatever dream I am about to have? I wish I could capture whatever it is I do before I fall to sleep.

The perfect writing trance, it is like nirvana for my creativity. It cannot be created only experienced.

Experience is the best teacher.

Finding The Right Light

Nothing is ever easy. There is always an excuse, a reason not to continue. In those moments you have to wonder why you put yourself there to begin with? Did you do it with purpose and the intention of work? Was it merely a dream, a hope?

Looking left, looking right, looking straight ahead the answer is nowhere to be found. Why don’t you look where it really matters? Inside of you. You are the only one with the knowledge. Only you can answer your questions. Even in the darkest of moments there is a light to your dream if you can find it.

Each of us has it. We can each do it. It doesn’t matter what it is. It is so simple yet we complicate it. All you can do when surrounded in the darkness is turn on a light. It does’t have to be the best light, it doesn’t have to be a natural light.

Simple cell phones can light up an entire darkened stadium.

My light is writing.

What about you?

There will be a new update to the blog (besides the layout change) coming. New and different content, I look forward to your feedback.

2014 is going to be the year, it is a promise.

It Finally Happened To Me

Champagne

My word count is sad but I am making a comeback- I will finish because it’s the only thing I know how to do.

I do have a pretty fantastic party scene involving a white helicopter and men wearing red tuxedos which is my shining achievement at the moment.

How is NaNoWriMo going for everyone else?
